In our Biblical story today, we find Jesus challenging Peter and his friends to put their nets down in deep water. Because they had fished all night and caught nothing, they were reluctant. But, at His bidding, they obeyed. Subsequently their boats began to sink because of the large catch. Jesus then told them they would become “fisher of men.” They left everything and began to follow Him.
Similarly, we are called to live our life with purpose. What is your ambition in life? What will be your legacy? My mother had a plague hanging on the wall in her kitchen that I saw and read repeatedly growing up: “Only one life will soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last!” That is a wonderful motto. William Carey, the shoe repairman who left England for pioneer missionary work in England a little more than 200 years ago lived by a similar motto: “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God!” Today he is considered the father of modern missions.
Determine to live your life with eternal purpose helping others to find Christ and furthering the Kingdom of God: “Thy will be done; Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven!”
